As We Are Introduced

 

In the early 80’s, Coit started losing gay people in her life about whom she cared deeply. She became peripherally involved with the movement to support children with pediatric AIDS. She also found herself pulling away from people—wary of loss. Creating As We Are Introduced was a way of expressing a certain fear of unavoidable heartache; she had the text inscribed on a bell, a literal reference to “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”
